Thursday Headlines: Long Beach B.S. Edition
Long Beach is threatening to jail e-bike, e-scooter and motorized scooter riders if they violate a recent ban.
Long Beach’s ban, according to News 12 Long Island, comes with penalties of up to 15 days in jail and up to a $500 fine for riders who operate the devices on the city’s boardwalk, beach and sidewalks.
Banning the devices is in vogue on Long Island, with Nassau County passing a legally dubious ban on their use. State lawmakers had an interest in issuing more expansive regulations to clear up confusion on the local level, but ran out of time on the legislative calendar.
Critics of this method of enforcement have pointed out how it may be a ploy to increase law enforcement interaction with immigrants and people of color while misreading the danger of illegal e-motos as that of e-bikes, despite them being different devices.
Well, they call it wrong island for a reason.
