The big news is that Gov. Hochul made her State of the State address and it included some little Easter eggs and plenty of disappointment. It's all in today's news roundup.

Gov. Hochul was poised to use her State of the State address on Tuesday afternoon to announce that the MTA will choose light rail for the Interborough Express, the transit connection on an existing right of way between Bay Ridge and Jackson Heights.

Gov. Hochul has fully endorsed a state legislative effort to allow New York City to set — and reduce — its own speed limits, announcing in her State of the State address on Tuesday that she will introduce her own version of the existing "Sammy's Law" bill that the legislature has failed to pass previously.

This morning, Transportation Alternatives put out a lengthy position paper outlining the group's ambitious agenda to reclaim streets from cars, increase access to open space, build more affordable housing, improve transit and get more people biking on life-saving infrastructure. And, yes, there was other news.

Stop the chop? The governor says, "No."

New York passed its Complete Streets law in 2011 after my 14-year-old daughter Brittany was hit and killed on Sunrise Highway. But the governor has not yet signed a bill that would make roads safer.

Will the court rule against urban development — which by definition is far more polluting than, say, an open field of trees — or rule in favor of it on the grounds that dense housing is better for the environment than sprawl?

They had her back, so now she better have theirs. New Yorkers who actually ride the subway supported Gov. Hochul by a much wider margin than her overall 69.5 to 30.3 election victory in the city over Republican Lee Zeldin.
