Thursday Headlines: Heatwave Hell Edition
Multiple outlets are reporting that Amtrak trains will travel more slowly than usual throughout the Northeast region to cope with the recent heatwave.
It’s not just because they want riders to wait on sweltering platforms. If tracks reach 128 degrees Fahrenheit or more, they can bend or buckle when trains travel at high speeds. The overhead wires that give the trains electricity can also expand and contract depending on temperature, which affects connectivity.
So two-hour delays are not out of the question for trains heading north from Penn Station, and that delay is passed on throughout the corridor. On the bright side, once you get on the train, that’s even more time to take in the majestic scenery of the Hudson Valley.
